  5.     Sometime within the next year, an eerily quiet, 280-ton
  6. lime-green ship will leave the docks at Mitsubishi Heavy
  7. Industries' shipyard in Kobe, Japan, for the first time. Though
  8. it will never speed faster than a leisurely 8 knots or carry
  9. more than 10 passengers, the Yamato No. 1's maiden voyage will
  10. be as unique as the first time Robert Fulton steamed up the
  11. Hudson River. Christened last week with a bottle of sake, the
  12. Yamato is the world's first vessel to propel itself through the
  13. water using the power of magnetism.

  15.     Japanese government and industry are bringing to ocean
  16. travel the same technology they have used in the development
  17. of magnetically levitated trains. The Yamato, named for a World
  18. War II battleship, is powered by superconductive electromagnets
  19. that have been cooled down to an energy-efficient -425.47
  20. degrees F. The magnets shoot electrified seawater through a set
  21. of jetlike thruster tubes, thus greatly reducing the noise and
  22. vibration associated with the traditional rotating propeller.
  23. But before this system can be applied commercially, the size
  24. of the magnets, which now limits the vessel's speed and cargo
  25. space, will have to be reduced.
